Alpenglow Sports Community Book Initiative

The Community Book Initiative was born out of the Covid pandemic as a way to continue to engage with our community, despite not being able to gather in our traditional ways and host our usual line-up of events.

2024 Community Book Initiative - Stewardship

The Format

Each spring, Alpenglow Sports reaches out to 10 community members who are respected and admired for their mountain pursuits, community involvement and inclination to make Tahoe a great place to live. Each community member is asked for two to three thought provoking and enlightening titles related to a theme, for a total of 20 books. These titles are designed to spark dialogue and illicit personal reflection and engagement, with topics including environmental, social, or adventure-related issues. After all, we’re all beautiful works in progress.

The Theme

For the 2024 season, we have chosen the theme “stewardship”. As we thought about what it means to be a vibrant, connected, and responsible community, stewardship immediately came to mind. We see this theme as an opportunity to explore all of the benefits of giving back to our community; from self growth and purpose, to improved environmental practices that protect this beautiful place we live in, to economic growth and development, to community support, and so much more.

The Non-Profit

We have chosen the non-profit Clean Up the Lake as the beneficiary of our Community Book Initiative. From May 13th -June 10th Clean Up the Lake will receive 100% of book sale proceeds from our 20 community recommended titles. Books can be bought online at alpenglowsports.com and shipped to your address or we encourage you to come into the shop to see these titles for yourself.

About Clean Up the Lake

Clean Up the Lake (CUTL) is a 501(c)3 whose mission is to activate local communities to join us in taking action to protect the environment, both above and below the surface. Our efforts include working with engaged community volunteers to remove submerged litter from natural waterways and monitor for aquatic invasive species (AIS) to improve water quality and ecosystem health while also educating the public on how litter accumulates, and AIS can be transported in the environment in unforeseen ways. To date our SCUBA cleanups have removed over 70,000 pounds of litter from lakes in the Sierra Nevada mountains and we have worked to engage over 1,200 students in the Tahoe area, through our Litter Education Awareness Program (LEAP) to educate them on the issues of litter in the environment and empower them to take preventative action.
